It may now be said without exaggeration that if, during the critical years from 1940 to 1943, South Africa had not thrown her whole weight with the Allies and kept this highway of the seas safe for the Allies, the ultimate issue of the world war I might have been different. Germany might have joined hands from the Middle East with Japan through the Indian Ocean--a disaster which might well have proved fatal for the Allies.
