The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of the author's knowledge by exploring some relevant facts related to Patient safety. While a lesson should represent an educator's creative engagement with the course content and learners, it should also flow from the careful planning that has occurred at the course level, which in turn reflects curriculum- and program-level planning. After completing the syllabus for your course, select one of its lessons and create a lesson plan and rationale. This plan should demonstrate your creative involvement with the material and best practices of teaching/learning, and also directly flow from your course objectives.

Explain how the objectives flow out of the course's objectives and what specific behaviors or outcomes you expect from learners as a result of participating in this lesson.

Through this lesson, the student will identify the 6 core competencies of Quality and Safety for Nurses, articulate in writing the importance of each competency as it relates to their professional role. , demonstrate the principles and practice of quality and safety as it relates to the 6 core competencies, while participating in clinical lab.

Upon completion of the course students will understand the principle and concepts of patient safety and how to use them effectively clinically. Students will have the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to deliver patient centered care, working as part of interdisciplinary teams, practicing evidence-based medicine, focusing on quality improvement, and using information technology effectively.

Patient safety has become a leading health care issue in the United States. Over the last decade several reports have been published by health care's leading experts indicating there are serious issues with safety and quality in health care delivery. Due to the seriousness of safety and quality, health care agencies across the nation have launched education initiatives to increase awareness of the problem, and to improve safety skills among health care providers. In the attempt to bridge the quality gap patient safety courses are being taught in nursing education across the country. Nurses are the patients' advocate and front line service providers who hold the responsibility of ensuring safe, quality health care is delivered to patients.

The course focuses on six core competencies that have been identified as the most critical skills needed to ensuring safe and quality health care. The core competencies include:

The course was developed with the Adult transformative learning theory in mind. This theory was selected due to the need for the next generation of nurses to enter the work force with the readiness to transform today's health care system. In order to do that though, student must be challenged to look at themselves, the health care system, patients, families and their relationship to each of these factors.
