Reference to the letter sent to JCAHO Hospital recommendations It was found through the survey that JCAHO suffered with certain shortcomings and is not designed to identify questionable care practices, it was further interpreted that recommendations mentioned were not strong or specific enough to result in meaningful reforms for Hospital accreditation. According to this letter that refers to a report which does not fully explore the relationship of JCAHO to its “customers” and even those who are on its board. Few consumers understand this relationship, and many are shocked to learn that hospitals pay large fees to JCAHO for accreditation services. The inherent conflict of interests that flow from this relationship need to be addressed through specific actions: a. JCAHO should disclose that the hospital paid for accreditation services. Disclosure should be required in all mediums used to market hospital services to the public. b. JCAHO should be prohibited from using the word "independent" to describe its relationship to the facilities it accredits. c. If HCFA is going to rely on JCAHO accreditation, it should contract these services, not individual hospitals. When accreditation standards are implemented, healthcare organizations are required to continually monitor structures, processes, and outcomes, measure indicators, evaluate, and improve the quality of healthcare services.

Accreditations bodies are independent, non-profit organizations with main role to help healthcare organizations to examine and improve the quality and safety of services they provide to their patients. They offer healthcare organizations a voluntary, external peer review to assess quality by developing standards, assessing compliance with those standards.
