Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA)

Abstract

Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) is a significant organization strategy that aimed at initial counter measure to operational error. The Research Paper has provided the significant information about LOSA its objectives and history. LOSA has provided aviation a new safety trend and methodology that could not be neglected in Airline industry. The research paper covers comprehensive details about the LOSA and its importance. One of the critical data feeds to Operations Risk Assessment and Management System is the Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA). This study is also discussed in the paper.

Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA)

Introduction

Aviation Management has become the center point of many researches and studies, as things in 21st century are becoming more complex in the aviation industry. With the beginning of the new century, several related challenges with respect to aviation management begins which includes drop in number of passengers, increased in the cost of fares, terrorist and environmental threats and carbon emissions from planes. As people are now more aware regarding the environmental impacts and their rights related to the aviation, aviation managers need to rethink and re-plan their strategies to tackle the current challenges. Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) is a significant organization strategy that aimed at initial counter measure to operational error. The objectives of these monitor programmes, built around Threats and Errors Management (TEM) frameworks, are to identify threat to aviation's safeties, reduce the risk such threat might produce and execute measure to manage human's errors in an operational context.

LOSA enable the operator to assess their levels of resilience to systemic threat, operation risk and front lines workforce error, therefore, provided that an honorable, data driven approaches to prioritize and implement the action to improve safety (Wiener, 1995). LOSA used extremely trained observer to gather information about flight crews' performance and situation factor on “normal” flight. By monitoring the flights from the cockpit, observers can be trained much about flights crew performance and crews' strategy for supervision threat, errors and undesirable state. LOSA is intimately related with Crew Resource Management (CRM) training program (LOSA, 2002). An exacting power of LOSA is that they identify an example of greater performances that can be reinforced and used as a model for training.

Discussion

The operations of LOSA started in the year 1994 at the demand of Delta AirLine. Subsequent to growing latest Crews Resources Managements (CRM) courses for the line pilot, management question if the concept learned in training sessions really transfer to the line. The airline simple perception of CRM performances at the period come from Line Oriented Flight Trainings (LOFT) and usual lines check. Most of the managers agreed this data was good quality at exposure ability issue but fell small in reflection of actual CRM performances. This encouraged a combined joint venture between Delta and The University of Texas Human Factor Researches Projects for development of CRM audits methodologies for ordinary operation. The major apprehension for developer was if the pilot would experience secure enough to usually perform in front any ...
