Introduction

Every organization needs a reliable flow of material. Logistics is an important feature, because managers must ensure that the movement of these materials so efficiently and productively as possible.

Maritime transport has changed considerably in the world over the last ten recent years; the sector has been particularly marked by a rapid pace well illustrated the container traffic segment whose growth rate is highest. To achieve economies of scale, shipping companies have invested in the ship market expanding container growing. Due to increased competition, there has been mergers and acquisitions in recent years, with the aim of setting up of mega transport companies. This trend towards ever larger vessels will increase the pressure for better port facilities and the consequent improvement of port productivity.

Open global trade and leading companies are moving to port centric logistics for their international supply chains. This gives greater visibility of stock in transit and improved management of shipping containers and trailers for short sea shipping. The benefits of port centric logistics come from reducing the number of legs in the supply chain, lower lead times and the ability to reduce inventory levels. Port Centric Logistics

It has been noticed that the structural changes in the United Kingdom had changed the preferences and practices of the consumer-led society and organizations. Therefore, most of the time the goods are sourced from the abroad especially the Far East and then imported in the UK. Almost every organization is involved in certain type of importing goods for their consumers which has resulted in a significant import trade through the main ports of United Kingdom.

Therefore, this is a prime reason why the issue of Port Centric has become the major issue in the United Kingdom logistics today, and is considered to be the significant problem for the UK logistics handled at the ports. The issue of port centric logistics is also termed as a multi modal distribution.

Now I come to the formal definition of Port Centric Logistics. It is defined as distribution centres located at the ports so that the more closer markets must be served through fast transportation of goods through reducing the freight miles. Port Centric Logistics offers ample benefits to organizations such as cost reduction, improved good distribution efficiency, reduction in the lead time and last but not the least, the achievement of “green” objectives.

It saves the a lot of time against the traditional patterns of distribution centre as most of the freight first passes from the port then it is forwarded to the distribution centre's.

Port Centric Logistics (PCL) - is a conception based on the assumption that distribution centres of companies exporting and importing commodities should be placed as close to container terminals (which ensure the cheapest mean of transportation) as possible.

Research shows that the port centric logistics operations have increased from the last 10 years due to the vast interest and consideration by retailers and third party ...
