Mary Cassatt is well renowned in North America. But when Europeans converse or compose about Impressionism, titles like Monet, Manet, Renoir, Sisley or Pissarro are mentioned. Is it because she was a woman and an American? Her attractive art work has acquired her location in the pantheon of the large Impressionist artists. (White 2007)

Cassatt brandished eleven works, encompassing La Loge. Although detractors asserted that Cassatt's colors were too brilliant and that her portraits were too unquestionable to be flattering to the topics, her work was not savaged as was Monet's, whose attenuating components were the most despairing of all the Impressionists at that time. She utilized her share of the earnings to buy a work by Degas and one by Monet. (Pollock 2006) She displayed in the Impressionist Exhibitions that pursued in 1880 and 1881, and she stayed a hardworking constituent of the Impressionist around until 1886. (McKown 2005)

In 1886, Cassatt supplied two paintings for the first Impressionist public displaying in the United States, coordinated by art trader Paul Durand-Ruel. Her ally Louisine Elder wed Harry Havemeyer in 1883, and with Cassatt as advisor, the twosome started assembling the Impressionists on an impressive scale. Much of their huge assemblage is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. (Mathews 2005) She furthermore made some portraits of family constituents throughout that time span, of which Portrait of Alexander Cassatt and His Son Robert Kelso (1885) is one of her best regarded. She got her primary directions in drawing and melodies when overseas, as well as being instructed in the German and French languages. Her primary exposure to French creative individuals Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, as well as Courbet was probable at the Paris World's Fair in 1855. (McKown 2005)
