Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women; one in 11 will develop breast cancer at some time in her life. The results of the Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Project and other ongoing screening investigations mdicate that mammography is the most sensitive and accurate method for the early detection of breast cancer. For these reasons, the American Cancer Society (ACS) now recommends guidelines that include a baseline mammogram for asymptomatic women aged 35 to 4o, mammograms at 1 -2 year intervals for women aged 4o to 5o, and annual examinations thereafter.
