Medication of Anxiety

Anxiety's Medication

In general, anxiety disorders are treated with medication, specific types of psychotherapy, or both. The chosen treatment depends on the problem and the preference of the individual. Before starting treatment, a doctor must perform a careful diagnostic evaluation to determine whether a person's symptoms are caused by an anxiety disorder or a physical problem. If diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, the type of disorder or the combination of these disorders must be identified, as well as any coexisting illness such as depression or substance abuse. Sometimes alcoholism, depression, or other coexisting conditions have such a strong effect on the individual, the treatment of anxiety disorder must wait until the coexisting conditions are under control (Siegel 2003, pp. 498-506).

People with anxiety disorders who have already received treatment should be informed in detail by their respective doctor about such treatment. If these people have earlier received medicines, then they should tell their doctor what medication and dose was used? If the dose is increased or decreased during the treatment, what side effects occurred, and whether the treatment helped to reduce anxiety? If they had received psychotherapy, must describe the type of therapy, how often they attended sessions, and whether the therapy was useful? (Weiss and Laties 1962, pp. 1-36)

Often, people believe they have "failed" treatment or that treatment did not work, when in fact, no treatment was given for an appropriate period of time or was administered incorrectly. Sometimes people must try several different types of treatments, or combinations thereof, before they can find one that works for them.

What are psychoactive drugs, their effects and what are the differences there?

Psychotropic medications are drugs that act on the psyche of symptomatic people. They are here only to a phase of reduction or mitigation of symptoms, a cure for mental illness is not only possible by drugs.

Psychiatric drugs are mainly used to treat mental disorders and neurological diseases, and sometimes, for example as an anesthetic or to treat symptoms of organic disease.

Psychotropic medications are aimed down on bringing the neurotransmitter balance in the brain back into balance, as some mental disorders a disturbance of this is based (Siegel 2002, pp. 162-183).

The discovery of antidepressants was also casual. In 1950 patients treated for tuberculosis with iproniazid, a substance that proved to significantly improve the mood of patients regardless of the infection. This and other drugs that inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO), were the first antidepressants classified as such by his action to eliminate the states of sadness. Ten years later came the tricyclic antidepressants and to date have found many more who bear some relationship to their ancestors.

Antidepressants are used for various anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and depression.
