Mental Illness

Student Introduction

I am a student of nursing and I am currently working on the topic called "Mental Illness". The topic identifies the relationship between Mental Illness and its impact on Sense of Coherence, Self-Esteem and Empowerment.

Introduction of the Article Writers

The research of the topic is conducted by Dr. B Lundberg, Dr. Lars Hansson and Dr. E. Wentz. Dr. B Lundberg is an associate professor at Health Sciences Centre in Lunds University, Sweden. He is also the Associate professor at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Goteborg University. His current field of research is mental illness and its relation with Sense of Coherence (SOC) and social rejection. That is how he contributed towards this research.

Dr. L. Hansson is a professor at Lund University and heading the department of mental health services research also specializes in Psychiatry. He is currently conducting researches on empowerment, stigmatization and discrimination with relation to people with mental illness. That is how he has contributed to the research.

Dr. E. Wentz is also a professor at Lund University and has contributed to many researches regarding psychiatric and psychosocial problems. His current research field is on mental illness and its impact on motivation and self-esteem.

Research Design

This is an exploratory research. The data is collected through convenience sampling. The research makes use of Qualitative and Quantitative methods of research. The reason behind using both the methods is that they aid in measuring theoretical aspect as well as the practical side of the topic. In terms of Qualitative, the writer made use of Questionnaires. The questionnaire had behaviorally anchored rating scale (BARS) questions consisting of scales. Precisely making use of Swedish Ranking scale which is approved in terms of validity and reliability. Questionnaires aid in collecting information in a standardized method. The questions used in this research are very apt as it clearly defined its scale from 1 to 5 stating which leads to what. It also uses the process of mean-score which helps to analyze the inclination.

The Quantitative aspect of the report is analyzed with Statistical Package of Social Sciences making use of regression analysis, Chi-Square test, Correlation, P-test and t-test. The use of these tools aids in analyzing the data in a descriptive manner. This research made use of multiple regression analysis which quantifies the link between mental illness and self related variables such as Sense of Coherence (SOC), Self-Esteem and personal empowerment. A fitted table was created between the 2 variables and their functional relationship is derived. Variable X being Mental Illness and variable Y being Self-related variables.Using regression analysis on the questionnaires clearly defined that Mental Illness lead to Social rejection eventually inducing low self-esteem, low sense of empowerment and low coherence.

Both qualitative and the quantitative method are very effective in analyzing the relation between both the variables and helps in deducing result efficiently.
