Name: Streptococcus pyogenes

Brief description: One of the most common species, M protein helps it (i) adhere to pharyngeal tissue and (ii) retard phagocytosis. It can be divided into two groups namely a-hemolytic and ß-hemolytic.

Disease caused: Streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat), scarlet fever

Distinguishing characteristic(s) of the disease: Strep throat; the respiratory droplets serve as the entry point for the bacteria to enter the upper respiratory tract through, and scarlet fever: This resulted in patients exhibiting a rash caused by erythrogenic exotoxins (Carroll and Reimer, 1996)

Complications: Rheumatic fever, Acute glomerulonephritus

Treatment: Antibiotics
