Reflection Essay on Midwifery

Reflection Essay on Midwifery

Introduction

The nursing and midwifery council (NMC) is the regulatory body for nurses and midwives. The NMC protects the health and wellbeing of the public through professional standards and education. For successful registration on the NMC register, I must evidence that I can provide safe and reasonable care, set out in the Standards of proficiency for preregistration nursing education (NMC 2004). In this assignment, I will provide reflective evidence to state what I have learnt about four of the NMC proficiencies so far. I will use the SWOT analysis tool to identify my strengths, weaknesses opportunities and threats to my learning. I will then state what my future aim and accomplishment, regarding this proficiency will be. I will then use this information to help create a personal development plan (PDP) using the acronym SMART to identify how I intend to achieve this desired outcome. PDP's are self appraisals that set clear goals and action plans, and they provide a good framework in which to organise and structure experiential development and lifelong learning (Burnard, 2003, 678).

This assignment will possess the reflection of my experience and involvement as a professional student nurse for the past year and a half, with special emphasis on module (NURM 2002) called Foundation of deliberate practice. As a student nurse, achieving professional standards is essential which are called "domains". There will be a Personal development plan constructed to underline what I have achieved and learned in my ongoing career as a mental health student - nurse (Schon, 1991, 39).

This assignment will address four domains (3.2 and 4.1) of the NMC (2004) standard of proficiency. As a mental health student, it is my job to provide the high standard of care to patients and educate all nurses in order to define what exactly their role is towards their actions in the clinical setting. I see myself responsible and accountable for the NMC Code of Conduct (NMC 1983).

In addition, I will provide reflective discussion in the field of the development and characterize the values and attitudes expressed in the Capable Practitioner (2001) of a service user to their health related to the above domains.

Finally, I will conduct self and peer assessment of authentic self awareness to demonstrate my personal development plan as a struggling practitioner. PDP is a life for me hence I will explain the value of PDP at the end to acknowledge my lifelong learning with personal experiences. Also, looking at my strengths or weaknesses and how to improve my practice in the future on the supplementary placements I will critically acknowledge my professional development.

The above issues will be explained more below by using accurate evidence and facts taken from my practice placement with reference to a variety of sources.
