Chapter 3

Method

Qualitative methods are modes of assembling details and figures, which are concerned with explaining implication, other than with drawing statistical inferences. What qualitative methods (e.g. case enquiries and interviews) misplace on reliability they gain in time span of validity (Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2003). They provide a more in deepness and rich description. In this study, qualitative methods (secondary research) will be used to investigate if high school Black male scholars get distinct disciplinary punishments than organise high school White male scholars for the equal infractions. The qualitative set about aspires to find out meanings and interpretations by modifying positions intensively in natural backgrounds and by subjecting the making details and figures to analytic induction (Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2003).

Research Design

Dalton State College (DSC), a medium-sized public organisation in the Southeast US and the University System of Georgia's newest four-year organisation with a drop 2003 enrollment of 4,135 scholars, drawn mainly from a ten-county northwest Georgia locality a service community locality of 301,450 inhabitants, was selected for this analysis. DSC increased from a juvenile school, based in 1967, to registering its first upper-division scholars in chosen baccalaureate stage programs in 1999. Dalton's dwelling shire (Whitfield) is the financial hub of northwest Georgia. Enrollment at DSC has increase two-fold over the last 10 years. DSC's most latest scholar profile encompasses an mean age of 27, a 63:37 female-to-male ratio, and few scholar community of 8.9 percent. The total number of full-time undergraduate scholars registered in 12 or more borrowing hours is 1,665 or 40 per hundred of the scholar population. According to the University System of Georgia Retention Rate Report for the Fall 2000 Cohort, DSC's 1-year keeping rate for first-time, full-time freshmen is 59.8 percent. The rate for all first-time freshmen is 51.95 percent. Both rates are amidst the smallest rates in the System's 21 baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. The result on enrollment is important since freshmen comprised 2,211 out of 3,647 scholars (61 percent) founded on drop 2002 data. A keeping difficulty of this magnitude has tremendously contradictory significances for the long-run achievement of DSC's baccalaureate programs.

DSC is a commuter school which comprised mainly of “parking allotment students”, the assembly at the smaller end of Astin's (1979) “continuum of involvement” (Astin, 1979). DSC's first-year keeping rate for the first-time freshman is very reduced, as shown in Table I, and is a anxiety to the College Administration. The study inquiry continues, how and what can the College manage to boost keeping and what principle plans are required? A lesser inquiry is, manage keeping insights alter between promise scholars (currently in high school) and present students?

Methodology and sample

The study comprised of two distinct reviews - for high school scholars and for present school students. High school scholars from a ten-county service locality in NW Georgia assisting college-orientation meetings either at the school itself or in the high school setting, directed by school admissions employees, were granted a ...
