“One Of The Best Draughtsmen The Country Possesses” is an intriguing title for a column, so I decided to look into it and read a few of David Hunter's pieces. This beautiful edition, prepared and published in the State in West Virginia sketch artist who has achieved national recognition in the mid-nineteenth century. Caused by the traveling exhibition of forty-two original drawings by David Hunter Strother, this book is a short illustrated biography of the artist and the exhibition catalog. Although there is still the original print published in the exhibition, the print quality in this catalog to provide those who do not view the exhibition with a rich experience.

David Hunter Strother was born in Martinsburg, the modern West Virginia, in 1816 and lived most of his years in the state. Strother has been described as "one of the best draftsmen country has," the subtitle of the book and exhibition. This difference came at the peak of his career for the work that he published in Harpers Weekly under the pseudonym "Port Crayon".

Strother life is etched in the segments in its early years and education, the author and illustrator (the peak period of his work and recognition), a soldier, and his last years as West Virginia and statesman. Biographical study, John A. Cuthbert, director of the West Virginia University Art Collection and curator of art for West Virginia and Regional History Collection, mostly on paper Cecil D. Cuthbert uses Collected Works Strother's, diaries, autobiographical works, and art from the vast reserves of West Virginia and Regional History Collection, to add a lot of local color and personal life Strother's. Liberally illustrated text preserves the integrity of the catalog and provides numerous opportunities to display artistic talents Strother, both before and after his famous "Port Crayon" years. Cuthbert use illustrations to contact the reader Strother early attempts at art, teacher, travel, and experience as an illustrator, soldier and statesman. The text is enriched with a significant quotation from the writings of Strother's. Although Strother drawings and illustrations to speak for their subjects, they are often much enriched by his talents, as vividly descriptive and insightful writer.

Catalogue of the sTeam volume of each of the forty-two paintings from the description page. Jesse Poesch, from Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University and co-curator of the exhibition, provides descriptive information and historical context for each image. Strother personal notes on the themes of his drawings accompany many. Research Poesch drawings and Strother while he presided over the efforts of most pictures. Half of the pictures selected for the exhibition depict the subjects of West Virginia, and the rest scattered throughout ...
