MySpace and Facebook

Introduction

Today, Facebook and MySpace, are the two most important social networks that exist. Specifically, we will discuss social networking on the Internet through both these competitive websites i.e. Facebook and MySpace (Buffardi and Campbell, Pp. 303-314). The popularity of these two websites have increased and have remained stable for a long time, and that is why there is a general discussion about what is the best social network that exists today.

Discussion

Both Facebook and MySpace offer the possibility to contact other people similarly. Both have features to send a request to establish friendly relations based on the confirmation of two participants. Both also have similar structures that allow users to search other users based on the contribution of biographical information, as the small school affiliation, location, common interests, sexual orientation, relationship status, and other indicators (Tong et al, Pp.31-49). After the huge growth of Facebook in the past few years, it has become the ambitious social network, in terms of the number of monthly visitors worldwide and had beaten its largest competitor, MySpace. Till the year 2008, MySpace dominated the U.S. market significantly, with 72 million new users. This led the facebook to think critically regarding such a critical situation. Facebook has won a total of 75 million new users, but it had only 13 million in the United States till 2008.

However, MySpace faced the declining traffic and successive changes in the direction that indicated from layoffs in the past two years. The re-launch of the website represents a critical step in its attempt to revitalize. MySpace's CEO, Mike Jones, said the site owned by News Corp is not intended to compete with the social network Facebook.
