Myth and Literature

Both the mythical character and hero Odyssey and Aeneid share some similarities as epics; both describe the trials of a heroic figure who is the ideal representative of a particular culture. (Barnett 1996) There are even individual scenes in the Aeneid are borrowed from the Odyssey. Yet ? why are Odysseus and Aeneas so unlike one another? The answer is that the authors lived in two different worlds ? whose values and perceptions varied greatly of a fundamental level. (Hadas 1965) To illustrate ? two common ideas woven into the Odyssey are custom and recklessness.

The Greeks as well as the Romans produced a couple of very well known poets. Virgil was a very famous Roman poet who wrote the Aeneid. The Aeneid is a single of the extremely well known initial myths of Rome. Virgil was born on October 15 ? 70 B.C. (Fox 2006) Homer was a very well known Greek poet who is mostly known for his well known epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. These couple of epics was to have been educated to children in Greece throughout the time of Homer plus they are still being educated today in America.

The Odyssey is an Epic poem written by Homer is to tell the story of a famous mythical war hero. Following the great Trojan War the Great War hero Odysseus travels backside to his dwelling Island of Ithaca to meet up his wife Penelope. With a mistake on Odysseus part the god of the sea Poseidon unleashes his fury on Odysseus. The goddess Athena will not allow Poseidon to kill Odysseus; therefore ? Odysseus must face terrible trials in order to reach his home land. (Virgil 2007)
