Balanced Diet

Balanced diet can be described as the meal enriched with all essential nutrients in appropriate proportions required for healthy growth. The healthy and balanced diet contains six vital nutrients that are as following:

Carbohydrates: are the vital sources of energy as it contains oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen.

Protein: are essential for growth and repair.

Minerals: strengthen teeth, muscles and bone.

Vitamins: are healthy for skin, eyes, muscles etc.

Fats: are also another source of energy.

Fiber: helps in maintaining the functions of intestines.

According to nutritionist that the balanced diet must provide fifty percent of energy form carbohydrates, thirty five percent energy from fat, and fifteen percent from proteins. However, the need of nutrients in the body varies with the age, growth, sex, lifestyle, illness and other circumstances (GCSE Biology, 2012). Dietary needs also change with the different life cycle stages to fuel active lives while supporting the periods of continuous development (Bupa UK, 2013).


Kids need a diet enriched with plenty of energy and nutrients in order to help them grow and strengthen their bones. Their major part of diet must include milk and other dairy products as these products are the great sources of calcium, iron and protein.


Teenagers are also at the phase of quick development so they also need an enhanced amount of energy and other nutrients. Their diet must contain nutritious food rather than sugary, creamy and fatty foods such as cakes, biscuits, and drinks. Instead, their meal must contain starchy food, fruits and vegetable to stabilize their healthy diet with their energy levels.


Adults require abundant fiber rich meals, fruits, vegetables, beans, dairy products, fish and meat. Their diet should not contain sugar and fats. Nutritional needs remain constant between the ages of 20 to 50 unless a change occurs such as illness or lifestyle change.

Older Adults: eating a balanced diet is important during this stage of life as the people in this phase start losing their appetite due to decrease in metabolism. Their diet must include plenty of vegetables, fruits, dairy products with sufficient liquid intake.

During Illness

Medical professionals suggest a dietary approach to deal with numerous illnesses that include allergies, diabetes, asthma, hives and so on. Change in diet helps in altering the illness reaction and makes the healing process much faster (Monroe, 2010). The nutritionally packed diet has the long lasting impact over the health and act as the therapy to control problematic conditions and illnesses in order to reduce symptoms. Diet therapy is a critical element of long term treatment solutions for various diseases.
