Obedience to Authority: The Departed Movie

Introduction

According to dictionary.com obedience is “ The act or practice of obeying; dutiful or submissive compliance,” which is expressed in this movie. The main massage of this movie is to show how extreme people may obey other's wills in order to reach higher positions of their life. The massage of this movie is very profound and makes you think about the ways people choose their paths which either destroy them or improve their quality of life. On the other hand the viewer learns that in this world the person who has power and authority can control the act of those who work under the control of him and modify their decisions easily. I believe this massage has negative affect on people who believe every thing that they watch in the movies.

The movie begins with 2 men graduating from the Massachusetts police academy. One man, William Costigan, was assigned to be obedience by working for the government and being rat in the Irish mob boss Frank Costello. The other man, Colin Sullivan grew up idolizing Frank Costello so he becomes disobedience by working for him since he was young. People who are obedient are more likely to be accepted by the society and comforted by it.

Discussion

Two authority figures which has the dilemma since Collin and William takes on a role to their identity and presented to be “William being on cops side and Collin being on mobs side.” This character from each other tries to take to main characters apart from each other by showing William being obedience and Collin being disobedience. Who tries to show his Disobedience usually means severe consequences especially when an order or a request comes from someone in direct authority to the object.

By watching the obedient figures in this movie we easily learn that a vast majority of society support the authority figure regardless of their own personal ideals. As milgram says "For many people, obedience is a deeply ingrained behavioral tendency, indeed a potent impulse overriding training in ethics, sympathy, and moral conduct.”

Frank Costello (Nicholson) finds his protégé, Sullivan (Matt Damon), in place of adoration, and he notifies him to kneel to nobody. He boosts him to connect the police and be his informant. On the opposite edge, DiCaprio's feature Billy Costigan disowns his petty-criminal dad and likes to connect the police. His overseer notifies him he can verify his moral conviction by connecting Frank Costello's gang and feeding back data ...
