Introduction

Homer was A Greek poet, to whom is attributed the great epics, the Iliad, the story of the siege of Troy, and the Odyssey, the tale of Ulysses' wanderings. The place of his birth is doubtful; probably a Greek colony on the coast of Asia Minor, and his date, once put as far back as 1200 BC, from the style of the poems attributed to him is now thought to be much later.

Arguments have long raged over whether his works are in fact by the same hand, or have their origins in the lays of Homer and his followers (Homeridae), and there seems little doubt that the works were originally based on current ballads, which were much modified and extended. Of the true Homer, nothing is positively known. (Crane, 2005) The so-called Homeric hymns are certainly of a later age.

Main Body

Homer's odyssey is based on various sections and all these sections are related to the poet's thoughts and ideas. (Griffin, 2006) The characters and the plot in the stories are conceptualized in an effective manner and the readers can gain a lot of knowledge regarding the different phases and stages of life. The story of the homer's odyssey shows that the author possessed the potential to transform his thoughts and ideas into words. (Corliss, 2004) Amongst the most popular works the homer's odyssey is one of the most recognized and widely appreciated poems(Griffin, 2006). The odyssey is divided into several sections and every section shows that a man should perform his duty with full devotion and he should treat his companions, guests and friends with full respect. The story of the odyssey also represents the facts regarding the ancient Greece and this element has also made the odyssey more recognized and appreciating by the readers and the students. (Corliss, 2004)

The author has given much importance to the host guest relationship and he states that a guest should be treated with kindness so that god can become happy with the humans on the earth. If the host will treat his guests with bad manners then such an act could become the reason of god's anger.
