Introduction

Hughes Electronics was formed in 1985, when Hughes Aircraft, the manufacturer created by Howard Hughes, was sold by the Institute Howard Hughes Medical Institute to General Motors for $ 5.2 billion. General Motors merged Hughes Aircraft with its Delco Electronics business to give birth to Hughes Electronics.

In 1994, Hughes Electronics creates DirecTV to engage in the distribution of a satellite package in the United States. In 2000, construction activity of communication satellites was acquired by Boeing. The rest of the company was placed under the control of Fox Entertainment Group when News Corporation became a majority shareholder in DirecTV Group in December 2003. He sold the communications satellite operator PanAmSat in April 2004. The group sold the entire Internet provider Hughes Network Systems satellite to SkyTerra Communications in January 2006. In late February 2008, after obtaining necessary approvals, News Corporation has exchanged its entire interest in the company against some of its own shares held by Liberty Media (Staff, 1997).

DirecTV (NASDAQ: DTV) is a service of satellite television. This company is headquartered in El Segundo in Los Angeles, in California, and began their operations in June 17, 1994. Currently, it belongs to The DIRECTV Group, which is controlled by Liberty Media. Today, this service is available to all residents of the United States, Canada, and Latin America, parts of Asia and in Europe. DirecTV has 18 million subscribers in Latin America and the United States.

This service has its own network called The 101 Network, available only to subscribers of DirecTV in the U.S. or Latin America. DirecTV also holds the exclusive rights to broadcast channels: NFL Sunday Ticket, NASCAR Hot Pass, and the "DirecTV Experience" tournament golf tournaments and tennis's Grand Slam. Generally, this service is used as a substitute for cable television in remote or rural areas where does not come first.

Since December 2005, DirecTV Group is a partner of Sky Mexico and Sky Brazil, Sky is therefore considered as the division of DIRECTV Latin America Group. Currently SKY Brazil is operated by the Globo Comunicações e Participacoes, SA has a 7% stake in DirecTV Group and which owns 93% of the shares. Meanwhile SKY Mexico is operated by the company Televisa that has 58.7% of the shares and DirecTV Group, which owns 41.3% of the shares. John Malone of Liberty Media bought from News Corporation's majority power of DirecTV Group. News Corporation was alone with SKY Italia (100%) and other European and Asian operations restricted TV. DirecTV currently broadcasts its signal to Latin America via Satellite Galaxy 3C.
