A mission statement is a very important part of organizational planning. The mission statement should be one of the first steps in building an organisation. (Harris, Ohlson, 2000, 764-780)

Mission statements are often confused with vision statements. A vision statement pushes an organisation toward a future goal or achievement, whereas, a mission statement guides current, critical, strategic decision-making. A mission statement is one sentence describing a company's function, markets and competitive advantages. (Harris, Ohlson, 2000, 764-780) This should be a concise and clear statement that says who the organisation is, what the organisation does and for whom and where. A good mission statement should answer three basic questions in the one sentence.

This mission statement is very lengthy and wordy. The statement does not qualify as a good mission statement according to the guidelines. This mission statement does state that the Agency is dedicated to the highest quality of patient and client care, which does indicate who the agency benefits. The statement does not tell why Legacy Home Health Agency is unique or what problem or need is solved or satisfied. There are many Home Health Agencies in the UK, Legacy Home Health's mission statement should state why this particular agency is unique and should be the prospective client's first choice. (Harris, Ohlson, 2000, 764-780) The statement does show that this company is dedicated to providing opportunities for the staff. While being dedicated to the staff is very important, the mission statement should be more geared to prospective clients. Without the clients, the staff would have no work and no amount of dedication to staff would make any difference.

The mission statement should reflect every aspect of an organisation in a few simple words. It should also describe the organisation's present capabilities, client focus, activities, and the structure of the business. (Ward)The mission statement needs to communicate the essence of your organisation to the stakeholders and the public. It is more important for the employees and/or volunteers of an organisation to know and understand the mission statement than it is for the customers or clients to understand it. (Harris, Ohlson, 2000, 764-780)

When the employees understand the mission statement it is easier for those employees to uphold the values set by the organisation's founders. If the employees do not understand the complete point of the mission statement, the consequences could be detrimental to the organisation. Employees could waste valuable time trying to fix a problem in the wrong way, the organisation's employees could be narrow-minded about a situation instead of open-minded like the founders intended, or they may not be able to realize when it is just time to give up. The employees may not know when the organisation has gotten too far away from its original goals and missions. (Grossman, Stiglitz, 2000, 393-408)
