Introduction

The examination of the organizational structure and strategy is vital for decision making in any business. The sustainability of any business certainly depends on various factors, but main among them are organizational structure and the strategy they pursue. Realization of the importance of earlier mentioned factors eventually aide organizations to create strategies that will ensure the long term sustainability of a company (Teece 2007, pp. 509-533). In relation to the discussion, this paper will examine the organizational strategy and structure of Tesco Plc, retail giant of the UK, and will prepare a report in which the organization will be examined via the application of different management theories, so that present or upcoming business problems and challenges can be identified and accordingly.

The Organisational Mission

Every organization set unique mission statement depending upon the nature of the business which is used to direct the future actions of the company. Similarly, an organization as big as Tesco has also devised its unique mission statement which provides guidance to the company regarding the path to move on. The mission statement of Tesco Plc is to become highly valued by the customers who use the services of the company, the communities in which the company operate, the loyal and committed staff and shareholders; to be a growth company; a modern and innovative company and winning locally, applying the skills globally (Briggs, 2012).

Importance of Organizational Mission

Business leaders and employees often divert from their set pat after a certain period of time. This stray comes in when a business make endeavours to create or invest something which does not satisfy and address their business line. This is the point where organization seeks guidance from its mission statement. Mission statement, basically, define a purpose and set path for the organization by defining what the company wants to accomplish and which path shall be obliged to accomplish what the company wants (Westley 2002, pp. 39-59). It actually defines a set of standards to follow while deciding policies on which the future of the company depends. Mission statement redirects a company to its original and defined path which help organizations to direct all their efforts in one direction.

Number of examples at present can be found straying away from their defined pathway in pursuit of goals that have never been a mission of the company. The phenomenon of stray occurs in situations like expansion when the company intends to grow. Expansion is the point where the company starts to invest in things which has nothing to with their business. Ultimately, organizations that defy their set standards are often ended up in uncertain or confounding business situations. A mission statement is vital to determine where the organization is going and where shall it be moving (Westley 2002, pp. 39-59).
