Introduction

Organizational communication holds central importance for success or failure of any organization, and thus the factors influencing and being influenced by organizational communication should be properly considered and treated. Communication does not only holds central importance in all the walks of life, but it is also the basic means of transfer and sharing of information the defines the nature of relationships and the extent of success of various bonds. The same theory also applies in business and organizations, and it is due to the same reason that business communication is regarded as one of the central and most essential components of business and it is treated accordingly. Communication can be defined as the transmission and transfer of message from the sender to the receivers, and organizational communication can be defined in a variety of ways, depending upon the view and idea of individuals. Different approaches have been presented to define organizational communication, with container approach and the social constructionist approach being the most prominent ones.

Discussion

According to social constructionist approach, organizational communication can be defined as a method of defining and explaining the various forms of social relationships, networks and teams. On the other hand, the container approach defines organizational communication as the mere transfer of message from the sender tot the receiver. This implies that the later approach is more concerned about the constraints that are placed on communication, keeping the pre-existing organizational structure in view and the former definition deals with the creative potential possessed by communication, which might assist in creation of new construct possibilities for an organization.

After going through both the approaches, the following definition of organizational communication might be adopted: it is the activity intended to balance the creativity and constraint while focusing on the individual use of communication in order to get done with the tension between working within the constraints of pre-existing organizational structure and promotion of change as well as creativity. For instance, consider an organization that is going through some major changes (Baker, 2002). All the employees as well as team members need to be informed about the changes in order to make sure that the change is well perceived and properly implemented, and the theory behind the change is well perceived by all the members of the team. Both the communication approaches mentioned above focus on the need of communicating all the messages to the team members properly and making sure that they are well perceived and properly understood, removing any possibility of creation of confusion. This is necessary because if the team members and the employees fail to get the main idea behind the change, the actual purpose is not fulfilled and the changes might also result in complete failure. On the other hand, if the processes and the changes are properly communicated and explained, there are more chances that the members would welcome the change, accept and implement it wholeheartedly and thus the changes would turn out to be a ...
