Introduction

The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant facts and figures related to the organizational issue in a criminal justice agency. We will achieve our purpose by ensuting our volunteer placement in criminal justice deparment (Metropolitan Police Authority).

Synopsis(A1)

We have worked as a volunteer in the Brisitsh Metropolitan Police Authority. Being a volunteer in the depatment, we have found out that there are 52 police forces in the UK, mainly organized at the local community. The forces of the Metropolitan Police and the Police of the City of London are in charge of public order in London. Each group of forces in England and Wales is the responsibility of a police authority made up of local councillors, magistrates and independent members. Since April 1996 the police in Scotland consist of four joint police authorities established by local councillors.

Working as a volunteer in the department, we have also found out that a new Metropolitan Police Authority is responsible for the London Metropolitan Police Force. The ranges within the Metropolitan Police are: commissioner, assistant commissioner, assistant commissioner and commander. After that, all other ranges are the same: chief superintendent, superintendent, chief inspector, inspector, sergeant and constable (police patrolling the streets). In the case of the Police of the City of London, the authority is a committee of the Corporation of London. In November 2001, the Police Department for Northern Ireland was created, responsible for maintaining an efficient and effective police service. The Royal Ulster Constabulary was renamed the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The provincial forces are in command of a police chief (Chief Constable), a deputy police chief and assistant police chief. Advisory groups as liaison between the community and the police operate in all police forces, consisting of representatives from the police, local councillors and community groups. Most forces surveys to provide information on public attitudes. These are used to improve the service provided (Call, 2003, pp. 343-376).

Working as a volunteer in the Metropolitan Police Authority , we have also examined that the main police work is done by constables, who are in permanent contact with the public. They patrol the streets on foot or in vehicles, provide information or appease the riot. There are local groups dedicated to the prevention of crime (each with the support of the police) to identify problems related to crime and try to fight it with advertising. In the UK there are some 157,000 full-time police officers. Of the total, 19% are women (Call, 2003, pp. 343-376). In the next section, the author will investigate a particular organizational issue within the agency in which the author is working. Reflects on how this issue impacts on the effectiveness of the agency.
