Consumer Electronics

Consumer electronics products once played a vital rule in Taiwan's electronics industry, accounting for some 20 to 30% of total production value and exports. Surging information electronics, accompanied by the stiff appreciation of the NT dollar and a steep jump in labor costs, have hurt the local consumer electronics industry inducing local manufacturers to invest overseas. The consumer electronics commerce has been mired in a slump since 1990. In 1989, over 300 factories were operating in Taiwan; only 245 manufacturers still operate four years later, achieving a production value of US$ 2.8 billion in 1994 and 1995, down 18% from 1992 (Phillips, 1983).

While consumer electronics output constituted over 42% of the total export value in 1982, by 1994 the figure had plunged to below 5%. Since customary goods are still the staples of Taiwan's consumer electronics commerce, the decline in the trade goods and trade value of consumer products is not surprising. Developing nations in Southeast Asia and ceramic are becoming major manufacturers of buyer electronics. Even advancing nations such as Japan, Europe and the United States are facing the same affray as Taiwan. These countries react by relocating production facilities abroad and concentrating on developing advanced products. The new generation of consumer electronics goods will amalgamate 3Cs technologies to befall intelligent and user-friendly personal or household products.
