The organizational structure of the retail store varies because of the size difference and type of business. The tasks involved in opening the retail business are normally similar. Many small retail stores are combined under one division and, large retail stores are divided into sub divisions with different categories of management. The department store has the complete staff which consists of a manager, assistant manager, and sales associates.

Organizational structure determines the division of work between workers and informal channels of coordination and chain of command. Organizational structure governs relations within the institution and identifies responsibilities. Organizational structures and design patterns are actually the organization of a company to meet the proposed goals and achieve the desired objective. The structure of the organization has a strong impact on the culture of the organization. Culture of a company has a huge impact on the operations of the company. This is the reason, the leader of the company is very important and should make sure that the company is being influenced in a negative manner and is not losing its sales.

The first organizational structure put affects on the operation of each store because; this structure is not hierarchical organizational structure. The organizational structure was the informal structure in which, employees are feel free to communicate with the top management and, positive outcomes were expected.

When there was the recession in 1980-81, business of the store chain provided poor outcomes. This was the serious concern from the senior executives. The basic structural problem was to improve the business with the grocery stores. In order to overcome this problem, a team from a known university was hired in order to find store structure and operations. These consultants made a visit to numerous stores in different regions and, talked to fifty managers and employees. Consultants had written a report which addresses four major problems.

The layout of the store and structure of the store was same as the design which was 15 years old. Each store followed the same procedures and, some stores were in areas where profit was little and, other stores were situated in suburban areas. The new system of technology was implemented but, it was implemented after two years in the stores.

Network structure is also used in organizations where managers are required to maintain and coordinate business relations with third parties such as customers, vendors and acquaintances in order to achieve a collective goal of success and growth. These relations are maintained and tasks are synchronized using telecommunications and electronic media and, hence, this type of system is also called Virtual Structure. Another important organizational structure is Team structure organizations with joint team can have both type of process flows (i.e. vertical and horizontal).
