Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “The role of Saudi Television in Preserving the National Identity” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “The role of Saudi Television” and its relation with “Preserving the national identity of Saudis”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “Saudi Television” and tries to gauge its effect on “Saudi National Identity”. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “Saudi National Identity” and tries to describe the overall effect of “Saudi Television” on “Saudi National Identity”.

Background of the Study

Concept of National Identity

National identity is the set of elements that make up the identification of inhabitants of a specific nation and distinguish them from that of other nations. There are separate cultural manifestation of each nation that can be recognized through a variety of factors such as music, art, national symbols like the flag, national anthem, national dress, national game, national holidays, and so forth. Religious festivals, norms, values, and morals would also exhibit the attributes of national identity for the nations that follow a specific religion (Doumato, 1992, 33). In short, everything through which one can perceive the sense of identification, differing from someone in another state contributes to national identity. From one point of view, national identity can be described as nationalism in the sense of association that one recognises with his / her country, excluding the political and ideological implications that are often distorted with this term.
