Paper and Conference Discussion on Contemporary Issues

Introduction

According to the articles which have been selected from online police magazines, there are two contemporary issues that have been selected that are posing as problems to people who are working in the security career or in the police career. There have been numerous issues which the police are facing on a daily basis however; these two concerns I felt need to be addressed as soon as possible because it would create a lot of problems for the police in the future.

The first issue identified was present in the article “Are Police Dogs Really Reliable” from a police magazine. It was in regards to the use of K-9 units in the policing. In the past the K-9 units have proven to be an invaluable assistance tool but there have been reports of misuse of these units by the authority figures(Police and Security News, 2012).

The second issue identified was present in the article “The Missing Link in Homeland Security” from another online police publication. The article is regarding the issue of non-cooperation between carious security agencies and the government security agencies under the names of Privacy and Freedom of individuals. While no one denies the rights of privacy of the organization and its core frameworks, there is still a need for mutual cooperation if the security and safeguarding of the city and its people is ultimately the aim of both agencies at the end of the day(Cooke & Hahn, 2012).

1st Magazine Article

Considering the first article in sequence, “Are Police Dogs Really Reliable”, there is a report regarding the unreliability of one of the most reliable units of police organizations in the past. Police dogs or K-9 units as they are called have been used for over a decade by the military personnel to embark on search and rescue missions of children and adults. The nose of the K-9 unit proves to be an invaluable tool for sniffing out the whereabouts of the lost or missing persons by their scents. Aside from that, the K-9 units are also trained to sniff and recognize the smell of drugs, chemicals and various other products which are deemed illegal by the governments and usually attempted to be smuggled on person by people. K-9 units have been accepted and are currently in use in police patrol cars, bomb disposal squads and even at the airport securities. Any checkpoints that are created in mountainous trails or jungles also have dogs with them to better sniff out any illegal immigrants hiding in the trunks or cargo holds of trucks and wagons (Police and Security News, 2012).

The problem which has been highlighted in the potentially invaluable K-9 is that it had been observed many times; the K-9 units have barked or signaled the presence of illegal substances like drugs, etc. after which the officers proceeded to thoroughly inspect the 'suspect' vehicle and turn up empty handed.
