Parents Sideline Comments: Exploring the Reality of a Growing Issue

This article is exploring the bitter reality against the youth sporting and the parent's behavior, which is directly neglecting the youth sporting. According to the study done by Lindsey C. Blom, Ed.D and Dan Drane, parents are being observed using the observational instruments and explore the parents' feedbacks. According to the results that were observed after using the statistical data, most parents showed their positive attitude toward youth sporting, while some also showed the negative behavior.

According to the parents holding the positive attitude toward the youth sporting, they claim that youth sporting help their child not only physically but also help them in increasing their motivational levels, also give them ability to response correctly at the right time. Youth sports help children accomplishment of un-realistic goal by parents also helps in reducing the anxiety that could easily lead to dropping out if not managed spontaneously.

Negative approach against youth sporting is one of the major factors that should not be avoided. The leading reasons of such behavior are the media shoeing the negative aspect of sporting. Such information puts very much imperfect image on parents mind, leading to the negative perception of youth sporting.

This negative behavior is not only disturbing the parents but also distracting the child very much at long run. The impact of this behavior is of high on the child's mind. This behavior in parents leads to violence, aggression and subtle behavior in child.

The article ends up with concluding the impact on the child behavior in result of their parent behavior. Researchers are more interested in making sports more fun for children as much as possible in order to avoid any anxiety and aggressive behavior in children (Lindsey 2008).

Parental Involvement in Competitive Youth Sport Settings

A feature of our research with high-school students was that parents were not extensively involved in the players' sport involvement. Our subsequent research focused on some of the ways in which parents may impact early adolescents' experiences in competitive sport. Although there is a range of specific types of parenting behaviors, most can be distinguished by two key dimensions: parental support and parental control. Comments that convey nurturance, attachment, acceptance, cohesion, and love, such as offering praise, encouragement or giving physical affection, can he considered parental support. Comments and behaviors that reflect discipline, punishment, supervision, and monitoring represent parental control because they are intended to direct the child's behavior in a manner considered acceptable to the parent. Based on these distinctions, we conducted a study to identify and explain parents' verbal reactions to situations in competitive youth sports.

Article found that parents' comments could be categorized into six themes: performance contingent feedback, encouragement, instruction, striking a balance, negative comments, and derogatory comments.
