Partition of Africa

Today out of eleven and a half million square miles that Africa contains, there are only about one and a half still inappropriate by Europeans. It will be of interest to trace briefly the history of the colonization of Africa. Passing over the invasion of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and Romans, and later on the Arabs (see Ancient History), we find that the Portuguese were the first to institute the European colonization of the continent (Lucas, pp. 23).
