Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “The primary provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “The primary provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” and its relation with “Identifying the key environmental drivers responsible for this legislation, and the stakeholders involved in its formulation”. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Introduction

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, Obama passed the law on the protection of patients and Affordable Care Act. AACN has not taken a formal position on the law on the reform of health care. The information below provides an overview of items included in the legislation that will impact AACN member schools, their students and practicing nurses.( Remarks of President Barack Obama 2009) Specifically, these provisions relate to the development of nurses, primary care, prevention, and expanding health promotion, coordination of care and outcomes for patients and the rights of patients and providers. This table is a tool for AACN members and interested parties to understand the contents of the bill and implications for the future of the profession. (Grier 2010)This is not an exhaustive review of the law, or does it connotes AACN position on the provisions.

Although the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has taken no official position on the law on health care reform recently passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the organization n has the support of many provisions that research in nursing education improved, and practice. Here is an overview of these provisions.

Title VIII Nursing Programs Workforce Development

Broadening and strengthening the nursing workforce (sections 5000, 5202, 5305, 5309, 5310, 5311, 5312, 5404)

One of the biggest efforts to reform the law includes nursing education is the continuation of the Nursing Workforce Development Programs Title VIII (42 USC 296 et seq.). Title VIII programs are the primary source of federal funding for nursing education and have not been renewed since 2002. AACN has worked with our colleagues in the host community for almost a decade to see critical revisions made to these programs, especially those limited support for doctoral candidates.

The new law:

• Deletion of the 10% previously imposed on the support for doctoral students under the Higher Education Grants Nursing. Eliminating this cap will address the need for more teachers and pompously prepared advanced practice nurses (APRN).

• Updates to the loan amounts education for nurses and nursing students who receive funding under the program of nursing student loans, loan repayment and scholarship program, and Nurse Faculty Loan Program. This review is essential to ensure that beneficiaries receive funding in line with current costs of education.
