I would love to reach an MSW degree from the University of XXXX to better prepare myself to continue my career as a specialist in mental health and substance abuse in the greater Washington XXXX. This will help me achieve my long term goal of some day the foundation and work of my own community-based mental health organization with group homes for people with mental illness and mild mental retardation.

I am currently employed as family support in Washington XXX. for a community-based organization, maintenance and strengthening families through outreach. I can help with finding housing, employment, development of parenting skills and deal creatively and effectively with mental health problems, especially substance abuse. I do home visits and also work with youth who are aging of the foster care system, helping them to integrate successfully into the community and find and maintain employment and affordable housing. I have also worked as a case manager for seniors, helping them to reach the services they need in order to stay home and avoid nursing home placement. At 56, I am far from a traditional student, however, I firmly believe that my experience will allow me to make a valuable contribution to their program and to enhance our celebration of diversity. I am a black woman and this is important to my identity as a social worker. I feel that my gifts include serving as a role model, especially for black women, and an example of how we as black people need to take responsibility for our own and help each other as a minority community. I often feel more effective as a social worker when I'm assigned to work with black clients, especially women.
