The term physician-assisted death may be used to refer to euthanasia or to physician-assisted suicide. Euthanasia , a word from ancient Greek, can be translated as “a good death.” Euthanasia can be active or passive and may be voluntary, involuntary, or nonvoluntary. In passive euthanasia, the patient does not receive life-supporting therapy, and this often results in the patient's death. In voluntary passive euthanasia, the patient refuses life-supporting therapy or such therapy is withdrawn at the patient's request.
