Pirated Movies

Introduction

A development took place few days ago, which involved Wikipedia and many other online communities that took a decision to blackout their websites for one complete day to protest against Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). The purpose of these two U.S. legislations is to prevent the distribution of pirated music, movies and television shows online. Currently, due to a lot of protest and concerns raised by several organizations, it looks that a support for these two bills is declining at a rapid pace. Most of the people are against preventing online piracy, but they are opposing the content of the legislations. They feel that their freedom of speech might get threatened because of the actions taken against privacy and security of the Internet. Therefore, all issues related to pirated movies will be discussed in detail.

Thesis Statement

There is one thing, which is very clear in everybody's mind that they will keep on protesting against the steps taken by the Government regarding online piracy. Only those actions will be accepted by the people that will not threaten their freedom of speech. Though, people will never support any piracy but effective measures to be taken in countering this issue. Therefore, everyone has a clear stance on the entire issue.

Discussion

The music, movie, and television industries have already spent a considerable amount of time and money for addressing piracy in different countries. There is a need to take stronger actions against those people that have an active involvement in producing and consuming pirated material in some form or the other. In countries like the UK and France, this factor is quite true. However, there is one fascinating fact that music and movie industries have suffered a huge amount of loss because of uncontrolled piracy. There are some vital shifts which are taking place that people need to be aware of in order to get ready for it and guide kids accordingly. The shift is in attitudes and technology that gives people the opportunity to either own or just access music. It is the difference between buying specific songs on iTunes and owning them versus paying for a subscription to Rhapsody to hear any song they want on a priority basis. There are many options in both camps, though the newer services fall under the subscription camp (Bowie, 96).
