Pistons

Introduction

A small cylindrical metallic piece or a metallic disk is placed in larger cylinders. This is done in such a way that the small cylinder fits the opening mouth of the large cylinder perfectly. This small piece of a cylinder is known as a piston. Moreover, kits operation is related to the fluids, gasses and their pressure enclosed in the large cylinder.

A piston serves the basic aim of converting the energy of the expanding or compressing gasses in to mechanical energy in combustion engines. The two basic types of pistons are cast pistons and forged pistons. (www.credoreference.com)

Basic Structure

Seven vital parts are combined to form a piston. These include a piston's top, known as a crown. Next is a ring groove. The ring groove further extends to these rings called Pistons rings. Then comes the ring lands. These solid chunks are inserted between the grooves. Then comes a piston pinhole, which is followed by Piston pin bosses which is followed by piston skirt.

Evolvement of Pistons

History

Cast aluminum in piston in the early days was constructed with an alloy of low quality. When piston was kept cold, the system would make a lot of noise because they were fitted loosely in the cylinder. To cater with this problem, the ribs of steel were provided in the Harley -Davidson pistons. However, on the whole, silicon was added during their manufacturing process to make the piston lubricated and heat resistant. Since then, a large quantity of silicon was added during the manufacturing of pistons since then to achieve the two mentioned goals. However, addition of silicon also introduces a couple of limitations in the pistons that include manufacturing of brittle and hard pistons. As a result, these pistons were dealt very carefully because slightest of force will crack the pistons.
