The opening sentence describes itself in opposition to the attitude of the Duke to his wife: he relates his wife to painting on the wall, and goes further in his reduction of it to a simple object, speaking of "my last Duchess, "as a previous acquisition that is about to put back. Vagueness is not lifted, but strengthens by the following sentence of poem. "My Last Duchess is termed a "theatrical monologue" for the reason that it involves three recognized features: an instance, a narrator, and a hearer. The influence or qualities in the verse "My Last Duchess", allows the rhymester to create two kinds of rhyme, the lyric and the performance.
