Police Supervision

Introduction

The management system of any institution serves as a process for directing and controlling people and work, so that organizational goals are achieved. An integral part of the management system is supervision, which refers to overseeing of people, their performance and behavior in the work environment. This activity tends to take place in all levels of organization with the exception of the work level. Moreover, a management system prevails in almost every organization and institution. If we examine the supervision of police, we find that they have a hierarchy, first line workers and supervisors, just like a corporate organization.

The police personnel like to be led by those who have them in confidence and give them respect. The supervisory office must apply the principle of wholesome human relations with common sense so that he is able to cater to his subordinates needs and queries. It is possible that such an emphasis upon making arrests is counterproductive to maintaining peace in the community. It may be that, if police leaders are looking out for the best interests of their followers, improved performance may result. The police manager respondents identified different dimensions of preferred leadership behavior. These dimensions correspond to the theoretical categories of transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership styles. This fact might be relevant to police managers who could take into account the effect of individual factors on subordinates' perceptions and behavior when trying to meet the workers' leadership expectations. The paper highlights the police supervision considering the followers' perspective on successful and effective leadership, as well.
