Introduction

Education is a part of Western concept of attainment of knowledge. Provision and attainment of knowledge is an experience of its kind. Those involved in the provision of education such as teachers, educational leaders, academic researchers and trainers have a lot of responsibility on their shoulder (Shaw, 1997). School improvement and effectiveness is a continuous process which is essential for effectiveness. The subject of modernization of the school system in the UK has been debated for more than thirty years now in the UK. Lately, the interest has shifted to curriculum enhancement and assessment criteria revisions (Silcock, 1995, p. 149).

In the UK system of education, primary education for a child starts at the age of five years. This is a very crucial age for a child in that at this stage the child is very keen. Hence, the skills such as writing, reading and mathematics should be enhanced right from this stage. The primary education for a child in the UK lasts between five to eleven years of age. In Scotland, the primary education completion age for a child is twelve years. The paper attempts to review the system of education in the UK in the light of student outcomes as the output variable, impact of leadership and family involvement, institutional structure and size, quality of teaching and the emphasis on professional development, student characteristics, peer effects, differential effectiveness, and assessing the non-academic measures of educational effectiveness. This influence of leadership and family engagement on educational effectiveness remains on the child for the rest of their life.

Impact of leadership and family engagement

The effectiveness of a school or the schooling system in general is dependent on the leadership that runs the system. Hence, the importance of good leadership cannot be undermined. A good leader is what makes a good system and monitors that the purpose of the educational institute is being fulfilled in every sense of the word. To begin with, an educational leader is someone who should come with a sense of responsibility and carry a vision. The educational effectiveness means that the school should not only disseminate knowledge but also to focus on encouraging students to critically evaluate everything they learn and participate in the learning process. This should be the main vision of the school.

Family engagement is also very important when it comes to school effectiveness. The role of parents is very crucial here. It is said that on an average parents should read with their children at least fifteen minutes each day.
