Introduction

When any structural material losses its capability of load carrying, the phenomena refers to the structural failure. This failure occurs when the material stresses to its maximum strength limit, which causes fracture or abnormal deformations. Tensile test is considered as one of the most fundamental test for testing the strength of mechanical parts. These tests are famous mainly for their simplicity, inexpensive and standardized nature (Instron, 2012). During tensile test, the material is pulled on to quickly determine that how the material is going to react when force would be applied. For this assignment, we have selected the chassis of Nitro Remote Control Car (RC). The tensile tests would help the developers of car to optimize the car performance, as well as to improve the life expectancy of chassis material.

Performing Tensile Test

The tensile test is used to measure the stress level which can be tolerated by any material. A complete and reliable tensile profile of material is obtained by letting it break under the action of applied force. The curve obtained as a result of this process represents the reaction of material to the application of forces. The most important point on the curve is the “Ultimate Strength”. An example of the curve obtained as a result of tensile test is shown in figure 1.

Hooke's Law

As depicted by figure 1, the starting portion of the curve follows the famous Hooke's law, as the relation between the applied force and the elongation in the material remain linearly dependent. For this region, the ratio between stress and strain remains constant, and the slope of curve is known as Modulus of Elasticity.

Chassis of Nitro Remote Control Car (RC)

Nitro Remote Control Cars are mainly famous because of their capability of packing more power. In addition, these cars can run on fastest speeds, and offer impressive displays (eHow, 2012). As with any other car, chassis is the most important part of this remote control car as well. All the other components of vehicle are joined on the chassis; the chassis serves as the skeleton of the car's body. Due to light weight requirements, the chassis of nitro RC is developed using anodized aluminum. Usually high tensile aluminum is used for the development of chassis, as it provides more strength to the car as compared to low tensile and mild steel. The best point about the car is the fact that the chassis is a direct replacement part and does not require any special skills.

The chassis of the nitro car is highly probable for failure as vibration over time due to high speeds can lose the parts attached with the chassis over time. To reduce the probability of aluminum chassis failure, it is recommended to conduct the tensile tests of the material. It is fundamentally important to test the chassis material, as it contains the most critical part of the vehicle; hence there is no room for flaws in ...
