Professional development is an initiative to attain and master the knowledge and skills pertaining to a related field in a specific profession for career advancement, as well as, organizational betterment. Regarding the profession of teaching, professional development pertains to equipping teaching staff with skills and techniques to impart learning in a more effective manner, as well as, making students achieve higher understanding of their subjects and achieve outstanding results. It includes both formal and informal learning of teachers. A professional development program outlines how a teacher should thoroughly teach (Corcoran, 1995).

Over the past few decades, the professional development programs have become fundamental and essential in all educational institutions. As education standards continue to rise, so does the need for professional development programs. Institutions are formulating their own policies to provide their staff with professional training. New psychological and teaching approaches are being introduced every day (Corcoran, 1995). Unfortunately, on the local district levels in the United States, these programs are still not being introduced. Schools and other institutions are continuing with their traditional methods of teaching. They still consider the professional development programs to be a formal method of teaching teachers. It designates how to teach better? Therefore, the education standards are not much improved on the District level in the US.

The paper studies the significance of professional development programs. It attempts to define the significance of professional development and how it is needed in educational institutions. The paper also shows how teachers are trained through various professional development policies adopted by institutions in cities and suburbs (Corcoran, 1995).

It also shows the importance of professional development programs for teachers in US, their effective on different levels and scales, and their design and implementation over time. It also explains why some professional development policies are more effective in one situation than the other (2agepro, 2009).In the end, the paper provides guidelines to design and generate effective professional development programs on district level, which are cost effective and adaptable for schools on all levels.

As far as, the field of education is concerned, it lies at the very heart of success of educational institutions (Aday, 2004).
