Aims & Objectives

The aim of the project is to prepare a proposal which outlines a sustainable plan that is consistent with the 5 Heritage Lottery Fund outcomes. This paper explores the and identifies suggestions that improve the operational aspects of the Markeaton Park. The project proposal is underpinned by relevant 'operations theory' to support the arguments.

Detailed Project proposals

The purpose of the operational planning program is to develop and implement a method of continuous improvement by addressing strategies resulting from the Strategic Planning process. The program will develop effective operational plans for efficient implementation of those strategies, resulting in the establishment of the smooth operations at Markeaton Park and the Mundy Play Centre. Strategies have been reviewed in an exhaustive manner. Initially the strategies were re-categorized into more coherent operational groupings. Following this review, the strategies were classified as either operational or strategic recommendations. Fundamental to this review, as well as the review of this document, is a clear understanding of what is meant by “strategic” and what is meant by “operational”.

Strategic planning and operational planning involve two different types of thinking. Strategic decisions are fundamental, directional, and future-oriented with a long-term planning horizon. Strategic recommendations are broad, overall priorities or directions adopted by an organization: they are choices about how best to accomplish an organization's mission. Operational decisions, on the other hand, primarily affect the day-to-day functioning of an organization; they implement strategic decisions and have a short-term planning horizon, often less than one year.

A series of questions was answered as they related to each strategy in the draft Strategic Plan. Each answer indicated that the strategy was either strategic or operational in nature. The final score, as well as some further discussion, determined how each strategy was categorized.

Based on preliminary work to date, some of the likely operational issues facing the management of Markeaton Park and the Mundy Play Centre include:

· Develop and promote job specific training opportunities

· Improve and streamline the facility design and development contracting process.

· Improve the condition of athletic fields through better design and maintenance systems.

· Develop an improved computer system to track revenue and expenditures

· Establish program development and training opportunities for community members involved in athletic programs (sportsmanship, etc.).

· Improve safety and security in parks and facilities through preventative and proactive measures. 

The Project Management Team
