Introduction

The process of generation or production of electric energy is in fact the process of converting energy from one form to another as sources of energy available in the centers of demand for electric power, according to the quantities required for this energy, which specify the types of power plants as well as the types of consumption and fuel types and sources of all influence in determining the type of station, the location and capacity.

Tidal Power Stations

Tidal energy is obtained by taking advantage of the tides, i.e. the difference in average height of the seas as the relative position of the Earth and Moon, and resulting from the gravitational attraction of the latter and the Sun on the masses water of the seas. This height difference can be exploited by placing moving parts to the natural process of ascent or descent of the water, along with pipeline and storage mechanisms, for movement on an axis.

By coupling to a generator system, it can be used for electricity generation, transforming wave energy into electrical energy, a form more useful and usable energy.

Tidal energy has the quality to be renewable, while the primary energy source is not exhausted by their exploitation, and it is clear, since in the energy transformation byproducts not gaseous pollutants, liquid or solid. However, the relationship between the amount of energy that can be achieved with existing resources and economic and environmental cost of installing such devices for processing have prevented a significant proliferation of this type of energy (Mantel, 2006).

Tidal energy is a kind of kinetic energy that is stored in the currents caused by tides due to the nature of the case for gravity of the moon and the sun and the earth's rotation on its axis and therefore this energy is classified as renewable energy.

Generating Electricity from the Power of Waves

The United Kingdom has long sections of coastline that face directly towards the Atlantic Ocean. Storms far out in the Atlantic lead to waves which eventually reach its shores. Harnessing the abundant energy in these waves can provide a supply of electricity for years to come without emitting greenhouse gases into the Earth's atmosphere. Conwy is one of the most promising estuaries of UK where the tidal power barrage could be built (Mantel, 2003).

Many coastal states began to take advantage of this kinetic energy to generate electric power, thus relieving the pressure on the thermal power plants, reduce pollution and the result of the thermal power plants run on coal or oil.

Tidal stream devices

Tidal stream technologies work by extracting some of the kinetic energy from fast-flowing tidal currents and converting that kinetic energy to electricity. To do this they cannot completely block the path of the tidal currents, as otherwise there would be no energy to extract.
