CHAPTER NO 1: INTRODUCTION

Problem Statement:

People mostly students often face different problems in acquiring secondary language (in our research we are focusing on Arab Learners) but what they do not realize is that confusion in communication occurs when they are not able to pronounce the words of the secondary language properly while speaking to the native speaker of that language (in this research English language). In addition to this communication breakdown happens as the native speaker is unable to understand the context behind the speech due to use of words with dual meanings or words not properly used within the sentence.

Significance of the Problem:

This research will highlight the causes behind improper pronunciation of words in English language by the secondary language learners in our case we have Arab students and Arabic speaking people, while speaking to the native speakers. In addition to this the research will identify the causes of breakdown in communication that are the mistakes made by secondary language learners while making up sentences in the learned language, but due to improper pronunciation and miss arrangement of words in the sentences the communication does not end up successfully. Furthermore, the research even highlights factors behind communication breakdown like cultures, etc and the major reasons for communication barriers. The study will help in discovering the facts behind the problem being researched.

Research questions:

Does the first language play an integral part in breakdown in communication?

What are the phonological features implicated in the breakdown in communication?

Language is one of the traits that distinguish humans from other animals, and within humans different languages are used by different people belonging to different parts of the world. People learn other languages for a number of reasons like commerce, business, relationships, research, etc. The process through which individuals learn second language is known as learning second language or second language acquisition. The SLA (second language acquisition) is the term used to define the discipline of science that is dedicated to study the process through which a language is acquired (Gass & Selinker, 2008, Pp. 1-14).

English being studied as an additional or secondary language by a number of people as compared to other languages holds a preferential status. English has been successful in becoming the global lingua franca ...
