Current Perspectives on Relationship Building

Relationships play a very major role in shaping the lives of individuals. However, it is up to an individual's discretion in the way he or she manages their relationship with the people around them. These people are more importantly the family members and the blood relations. Today, the family structure of America has taken a different shape. This has occurred mainly because of the changes in level of independence and freedom that have been given to the people.

The family structure that persisted in America previously was the normal family structure that consists of a male father, female mother and children. However, massive changes have been observed in the family structure of America today. Many changes have taken place in the family structure, in America. This has taken place mainly because of the presence of heterosexual and homosexual individuals, single parent, nuclear, and extended families. These changes in the family structures have a lot of impact on the family structure which is why it has also effected the other social institutions (Tischler, 2010).

Assessment

Heterosexual couples are the opposite genders who develop likeliness for one another and marry each other. These couples have babies and live like a happy family. However, there are many problems that are occurring in America today. This happens mainly because of conflicts between the parents which often results in divorce and separation. This has a very negative impact on the children as their mentality gets affected.

The case discusses the life of Ruthie Williamson who seeks help from counseling services on suggestion of Maxine Deville, her employer. Ruthie is a 38 year old woman who was undergoing with reference to her life at work. This was because she was because of issues of absenteeism, self-preoccupation and increasingly poor work performance. Although she did not have any believe in counseling, she approached the counselor only on the suggestion of her employer who was also her dear friend.

Ruthie was a Caucasian woman from rural Maine and was currently employed by Tempratools. This company made equipment for heating and other temperature control devices and Ruthie worked here as a factory line supervisor. It was since twenty-two years of age when she started working here. Ruthie had three children and has been divorced two times. Her eldest daughter, Glenda was born when Ruthie was 17 years old. She ran away with Miguel Gomez, a Mexican illegal farm worker and began to live with her paternal grandmother where she gave birth to the baby. It has been since her teen age that she started running and was consuming drugs. She also wanted to consume drugs because she used be teased by her family and friends since she was chubby. Therefore, to keep her from gaining weight, she opted for drugs.
