Typical And Atypical Behaviour

A typical behaviour is hard to characterise as there is no usual behaviour and it is hard to characterise normal. However it can be characterised as behaviour that is distinct from other persons in some way. A criteria is utilised to by psychologists to work out those who display a typical behaviour and these include;

Behaviour, which is uncommon/infrequent

Behaviour, which is communally unacceptable

Evidence of distress

Maladaptive behaviour

Categorising persons is significant as it can lead to misdiagnosis, which can have grave consequences.

Statistical Abnormality

Certain behaviours are statistically infrequent yet are not classified as abnormal. This encompasses such things as outstanding melodies gifts as it is glimpsed to be highly desirable. Therefore moderating which behaviours are infrequent and abnormal should entail some sort of criterion. (Samantha 2006:10) A further limitation to this delineation of abnormality is it is hard to differentiate what a mental disorder is in context to this definition. Social Abnormality

A farther delineation of psychological abnormality is deviation from communal norms. This is recounted as persons who act in a communally deviant manner. Before 1973 homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder, but in present times is advised to be a part of humanity and is not advised abnormal.
