Introduction

While focusing on the psychological factors the therapist use about 400 kinds of psychotherapy approaches but in this assignment we will be focusing on the three different types of approaches that are the psychodynamic approach, behavioral approach and cognitive approach. All these psychological approaches are designed as a source of treatment for treating the psychological problems by adjusting the behavior of the individual and assessing them in adapting a better knowledge about themselves and their future, present and past.

Psychodynamic Approach

This kind of approach searches in bringing the unacceptable impulses and unsettled past conflicts through the unconscious towards the conscious, in which patients might deal with the problem efficiently. This approach is dependant on Freud's psychoanalytic approach towards personality that holds the fact that individuals utilize psychological strategies, defense mechanisms in order to defend themselves from “unacceptable unconscious impulses”. These unacceptable impulses and conflicts can never go away but a number of anxieties related to them can create abnormal behavior within the neurotic symptoms called by Freud.

Behavioral approach

This kind of treatment approach is created on the primary process of learning like extinction and reinforcement and assumes that abnormal and normal behaviors both are learned. In this it can be observed that the individual who have not been successful in learning the skills they require to deal with problems within everyday life or they might have adopted faulty patterns and skills which are constantly maintained with some kind of reinforcement. In order to adjust this abnormal behavior this approach is used that these individuals have to adopt newer kinds of behaviors by replacing the faulty ones.
