Introduction

The Puritans as a community grew out of a revolt against the Church of England in the late sixteenth century. They were essentially a group of people who had lost faith in the Church due to its strict social, political and especially religious policies which left no room for freedom to practice their religious beliefs. These colonists were mostly intellectuals and well educated people who contributed greatly towards the rather limited collection of American literature.
