Abstract

In this article, I argue that we are now in a position where market research will allow us to add a new layer of understanding the evolution of pre-modern complex society. A new approach is productive, I argue, because of recent theoretical advances in economics and anthropology. In anthropology, until recently, the role of markets in pre-modern society is widely misunderstood and, unfortunately, therefore, largely ignored, due to the influence of anti-market mentality that comes from the ideas of Karl Polanyi substan. At the same time, recent economic theory has been distorted by market fundamentalists who see the market as a place where the rational and selfish actions of market participants an efficient economy can provide the highest benefits to society.
