Thesis Statement

Stigma and Discrimination in a mentally ill person results in the late recovery of the patient as it de-motivates him, thereby lowers his self esteem.

Introduction

The impact of stigma and discrimination in a person with mental illness is the biggest impediment to the recovery process, and contributes not only to the person late recovery, but also the development of low self-esteem. It interferes in the process of finding and maintaining employment, inability to continue or finish their studies, achieve technical or professional goals, adequate housing, the lack of social and community support (Rowlands, 2000). Discrimination affects the lives of many people with mental illness, making it more difficult to be successful in their personal relations, marriage, childcare, work and social life. However, awareness and understanding that mental disorders are not defects or limitations of power, but are diseases that respond to specific treatments, may dissipate most of the negative stereotyping and conceptions in this regard.

Family Members of the Patient

Although the misconception persists that families are responsible for mental health problems, the reality is that when a mentally ill person begins his treatment and recovery, emotional support from family and friends is vital. Families are not the cause, and may be part of the solution. Their involvement and support can sometimes mean the difference between life and death (Hayward, 1997).

Unfortunately, families are also victims of stigma known as "stigma by association." The belief or attitude that the family is guilty of mental illness affects the way in which mental health professionals treat the family members. Stigma creates a cycle of discrimination and social exclusion for those who suffer from mental health problems and for those who are close.
