Recycling in Auckland

Introduction

Recycling possess actions to reduce the production of objects that could become waste. It consists of those actions which allow a re-use of a product to give a second life, with the same or different use. It includes all those operations of waste collection and treatment that allow reintroduction in a life cycle. It has been proven one of the best ways to reuse the waste materials. Recycle materials include glass, metal, paper, textile, plastic and electronics. Although recycling had been part of the framework of daily life, the habit thus diminished. Recycling received a significant boost during World War II for patriotic reasons, as a means of providing materials for the war effort, but again declined in the postwar period (Jirang & Forssberg, 2003). Interest revived with the growth of the environmental movement in the 1970s. Sustainability in the recycling can be achieved by making sure that people who are a part of this business are making efficient use of the resources. Sustainability in this activity can be achieved by making this an ongoing process and by creating a good market for this product (Ackerman, 2007). This will help in recycling products and in reusing them for the good of the society, as well as, the people. Products that are being recycled and reused are of good quality because they have a huge target market and if they do not produce good quality products, they will lose customers.

Discussion

The vast amount of waste created within the city of Auckland limits is a growing concern. Cities such as Naples, Italy, for example, have been facing serious concerns because of overfilling landfills. Recycling in Auckland is one answer to the problem of urban waste. Recycling is the recovery of discarded material for its reuse in new products. By reusing material destined for disposal, municipal recycling reduces an individual's ecological footprint by saving energy; avoiding the use of virgin resources, such as trees; and creating jobs (Recycling in Auckland).

Curbside recycling is the most common recycling service provided in Auckland. There are a variety of ways to handle curbside pickup. Municipal governments offer recycling as a citywide service. In these instances, the city either contracts with a for-profit or a nonprofit hauling company or provides recycling services itself. If the city does not offer recycling services, which is becoming increasingly uncommon, curbside pickup may be available via independent companies. ...
