CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION Outline of The Study

Generally speaking, self-esteem, how people feel about themselves and how much they love themselves. Thus, people who have higher self-esteem are expected to have a positive image of themselves and thus have more confidence and self esteem. During the semester, students may experience a variety of adversities, such as failure to pass a test or a bad sign for a very important assignment (Coopersmith2000). Students are required to overcome these hardships, not to interfere with their latest and final assessment. However, it requires courage and confidence. Be more confident, students with higher self-esteem may come to these adverse situations in a positive and confident. They may also exhibit higher levels of frustration tolerance, as soon as they get into trouble (Primavera Simon 2004). In addition, as a result of a more self-confidence and dignity, they can have confidence that they are capable and competitive, and whatever happened to them is a result of their own behavior and actions. Thus, students with high self-esteem can work even harder when they are in trouble to prove their abilities and competence. As a result, those students have more opportunities to bounce back and do so, at last.

Background of the study

Greater academic success leads to higher self-esteem Academic success is measured by marks and grades at the time. Upon receipt of high school students can receive compliments from teachers, peers or parents. Students can then feel more confident and accepted. Good quality can lead to the belief of students that they are competitive. In contrast to the poorer classes could mean for the students that they are useless and have less respect for themselves. In addition, students with poor grades might feel that they are not able to do something, as well as their peers. Finally, they tend to adopt a negative attitude toward themselves. In short, better academic results can help improve self-image, and then raise self-esteem. The purpose of the study

In short, the purpose of this study is to find the relationship between self esteem and academic success, whether they are negative/positive correlated, or one can lead to the other, or whether a third factor can affect them.

Aims and objectives

This correlational study was to find correlations between self-esteem and academic achievement. Thus, self-esteem and academic success will be the variables of the study. How are abstract or can have several meanings when it comes to self-esteem and academic, we must make them precise and measurable to study the relationships between them, so we need an operational definition. In this study, we have to quickly define the terms "self" and "academic success.
